China Pharmaceutical University

China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) is known for its long history and its leading role in China’s pharmaceutical academia. It is situated in the historical and cultural city of Nanjing, is one of the “211 project” key universities affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China, and listed among the “Double First-Class” universities in China. The University was founded in 1936 as China’s first independent four-year National College of Pharmacy and the first public institution for higher pharmaceutical education in China. Over the 80 years, it has been making important contributions to promote the development of national healthcare, which well represents its motto “Dedicated to academic excellence and devoted to public health.” The University is composed of two campus, namely the Xuanwumen Campus and the Jiangning Campus, which cover a total area of about 2100 mu (140 hectares). There are a total of 16 schools and departments, covering 7 disciplines including medicine, science and engineering. There are 31 undergraduate majors, 3 associate (higher vocational) majors, and 3 doctoral research areas (pharmacy, Chinese pharmacy, biology), including 27 doctoral programs and 2 post-doctoral research centers. Currently, CPU hosts more than 16,781 full-time students, including 11,593 bachelor’s or associate degree candidates, 4,682 postgraduates, 505 international students. It has 1,684 faculty and staff including 1,037 full-time teachers. CPU adheres to the concept of academic first, teacher-student-oriented, reciprocal and double-win, and cultivates talents for the pharmaceutical industry. Since its foundation, its alumni include more than 100,000 high-quality pharmacy professionals, 10 academicians and a large number of well-known experts and scholars in the field of pharmacy. Since 2000, it has won four times the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award (conferred every four years), the highest governmental award of China's education. The employment rate of graduates has long been the top among the universities under the Ministry of Education and universities in Jiangsu Province. Among CPU's faculty members, there are many well-known experts in the field of pharmacy, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the German Academy of Sciences, 6 winners of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Youth, 2 national outstanding teachers, and a large number of national talent project winners. CPU is committed to build a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary academic system. The disciplines pharmacy and Chinese pharmacy has always maintained a leading role in China, and its international influence has been greatly increasing year by year. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, the pharmacy discipline was rated A+ and among the first tier of China. In 2020, 5 disciplines including Pharmacology and Toxicology, Chemistry, Biology & Biochemistry, Clinical Medicine, and Materials Science ranked ESI global top 1%, especially, Pharmacology and Toxicology ranked ESI global top 1‰ (5 out of 10,000), 34th in the world and 1st in China. In the 2020 US News World University Rankings, CPU's Pharmacology and Toxicology rank 18th in the world and 1st in Asia. In the 2019 Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, CPU's pharmacy discipline ranks 43rd in the world. In Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), CPU's Medicinal Chemistry has been ranked 3rd in the world for three consecutive years. CPU takes the initiative to serve China's major national strategies and continuously improves the independent innovation capability of new drug research and development. It has founded key labs including the State Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines and key labs at provincial or ministerial levels, engineering technical centers, and 31 innovative platforms. The university has established academic collaboration with overseas universities and institutions in over 40 countries and regions. In 2016-2020, CPU was ranked 1st among China's universities in the number of major scientific and technological projects awarded by the National Major New Drug Development project, winning the National Science and Technology Award for five consecutive years, including 4 Science and Technology Progress Award and 1 Technology Invention Award.
